Reflective Workout Gear for Early Morning and Night Runs
Share
For a lot of guys, the only time to run is before work or after the day is done. That usually means low light, and low light means drivers and cyclists have a harder time seeing you. What you wear can help.
Why visibility matters in low light
At dawn, dusk and after dark, dark clothing blends into the background. Drivers are also dealing with glare, wet roads and their own distractions. The easier you are to spot, the more time everyone has to react.

How reflective details work
Reflective material bounces light back toward its source. When headlights hit it, it lights up in the driver's line of sight, even if the rest of your outfit is dark. That is different from bright colors, which help in daylight and twilight but do not glow in headlights.

What to wear for low-light runs
A top with reflective details
Reflective accents on your shirt add visibility right where drivers are looking. The KYNOS Performance Tee has reflective detailing, plus a 160 GSM nylon, polyester and spandex blend that wicks moisture and dries fast. It comes in black, olive, blue and purple.
Lighter or brighter colors
At dawn and dusk, a lighter or brighter top stands out more than black. Blue and purple are easier to pick out than an all-black outfit.
Pants that move with you
Stretch joggers with a tapered leg keep fabric off your shoes and out of your stride. See can you run in joggers for what to look for. The FlexStride Jogger has four-way stretch, zip side pockets for your phone and keys, and comes in navy, black and olive.

Extra visibility for full darkness
Reflective details on clothing work best as one part of the plan. For runs in full darkness, many runners add a headlamp, a clip-on light or a reflective vest.
Low-light running tips
- Run against traffic where there is no sidewalk, so you can see cars coming.
- Pick well-lit routes you know, especially in winter.
- Keep one earbud out or the volume low so you can hear what is around you.
- Tell someone your route and carry your phone. Zip pockets help.
- Do not assume drivers see you. Make eye contact at crossings.
