Best Workout Shirts for Men: What to Look For

Any shirt can go to the gym. Not every shirt is built for it. The difference shows up mid-session, when a cotton tee is soaked and clinging, or a loose one keeps riding up every time you reach overhead. A good workout shirt handles sweat, moves with you, and still looks sharp when you leave.

Here is what to look for.

1. Fabric: synthetic over cotton

Cotton absorbs sweat and holds onto it, so it gets heavy and slow to dry. Performance synthetics like nylon and polyester absorb very little water, so sweat moves off the fabric and dries faster. For the full comparison, see polyester vs. nylon vs. cotton for workouts.

2. Stretch

A good training shirt includes some spandex or elastane. It lets the fabric move with your shoulders and chest through presses, pull-ups, and overhead work, then return to shape instead of stretching out.

3. Fabric weight

Too thin and a shirt can cling and look sheer. Too heavy and it traps heat. A light-to-midweight fabric, around 150 to 180 GSM, gives you enough body to hang cleanly while staying light enough to train in. For more, see what GSM means in clothing.

4. Fit

Look for an athletic fit: close through the chest and shoulders, sleeves at mid-bicep, and a hem that stays at your waistband when you reach overhead. Too loose and it bunches under a barbell. Too tight and it restricts you. For a full breakdown, see how gym clothes should fit.

5. Seams and construction

Check the seams, especially at the shoulders and sides. Flat, smooth seams are less likely to rub during repetitive movement than thick, raised ones. Run your hand along the inside of the shirt before you buy.

6. Versatility

The best workout shirts are not limited to the weight room. A solid-colored, well-fitted tee works for lifting, running, cycling, studio classes like Pilates (see what men should wear to Pilates) and everyday wear, which means you need fewer of them. See how to build a minimalist gym wardrobe.
