How to Prevent Chafing at the Gym: What Actually Helps
Share
Chafing is one of those problems nobody talks about until it happens. A few sets of lunges or a long session on the bike, and your inner thighs are raw for days. The good news: a few changes to what you wear and how you train can help a lot.
What causes chafing
Chafing comes from repeated rubbing, usually skin on skin or skin on rough fabric. Sweat makes it worse, because damp skin is softer and more easily irritated, and salt left behind as sweat dries adds more friction. The most common spots for men are the inner thighs, but it can show up under the arms and anywhere clothing rubs.
1. Choose smooth fabric over cotton
Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet, and a damp, heavy fabric rubbing against skin is a recipe for irritation. Smooth synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester absorb less water and dry faster, so they tend to rub less as you sweat. For the full comparison, see polyester vs. nylon vs. cotton for workouts.
2. Cover your thighs
Much chafing is skin on skin. Full-length training pants put a layer of fabric between your thighs, which can help reduce that direct rubbing during lunges, step-ups and other leg work.

3. Get the fit right
Loose, baggy fabric bunches and rubs. Pants that are too tight dig in. Look for a fit that follows your legs without clinging or sagging, with enough stretch to move with you. For more fit checks, see how gym clothes should fit.

4. Watch high-rep and cardio sessions
The more repetitions, the more rubbing. Long bike rides, rowing, running and high-rep leg work are where chafing shows up most. These are the sessions where fabric and fit matter most.

5. Simple habits that help
- Start dry: put on clean, dry clothes before training, not the ones you wore all day.
- Use an anti-chafe balm: many people apply one to problem spots before long sessions.
- Change out of sweaty clothes quickly: do not sit around in damp gear after your workout.
- Keep your gear clean: built-up salt and residue can make fabric rougher. See how to wash workout clothes.

If it happens anyway
Clean the area gently, let it dry and give it a break from rubbing. If irritation does not settle or looks infected, check with a doctor.
