What to Wear for Calisthenics (Men)

Calisthenics is training with your own bodyweight: pull-ups, dips, push-ups, L-sits, pistol squats, and handstands. It asks different things of your clothes than lifting or running does. You're hanging, pressing, tucking your knees, and sometimes going upside down, often at an outdoor park. Here's what actually works.

The three problems calisthenics creates

  • Hanging and going upside down: loose shirts ride up or fall over your face.
  • Bar and bench work: baggy fabric can catch on bars, rings, and parallettes.
  • Moving between stations: phones and keys slide out of open pockets when you're inverted or swinging.

Every piece below solves one of those.

Top: fitted, not baggy

A fitted performance tee stays closer to your body on pull-ups and hangs, and it's less likely to flip up during handstands and inversions. It also lets you see your form in a mirror or on video, which matters a lot for skill work like planches and levers.

The KYNOS Performance Tee has an athletic fit and a quick-dry nylon, polyester, and spandex blend, in black, olive, blue, and purple.

Bottoms: stretch plus a tapered leg

Calisthenics is full of deep knee bends and wide leg positions: pistol squats, L-sits, tuck holds and leg raises. You want four-way stretch so nothing pulls at the knees or seat, and a tapered leg with no cuff so fabric doesn't bunch around bars or catch your feet on leg raises.

Shorts work too, but pants protect your legs on rough outdoor bars and during knee hangs, and they cover more on cold mornings at the park.

Pockets that zip

This is the one most people forget. Outdoor calisthenics usually means no locker. Zip pockets keep your phone and keys in place when you're hanging, swinging, or upside down.

The KYNOS FlexStride Jogger has zip side pockets, 80% nylon and 20% spandex four-way stretch, and a tapered leg with no cuff, in navy, black, and olive.

Shoes and extras

  • Shoes: flat, flexible trainers. You need grip and balance for pistols and jumps, not heavy cushioning.
  • Chalk: helps your grip on bars, especially outdoors in warm weather.
  • Skip: hoodies with dangling strings, loose tank tops and anything with big buckles or zippers on the front that can catch on a bar.

Quick checklist

  • Fitted tee that stays put when you hang
  • Stretch pants with a tapered leg
  • Zip pockets for your phone and keys
  • Flat, grippy shoes
